The Origin Story
Tanzania is among Africa's most significant gold-producing territories, with artisanal mining traditions running generations deep. This nugget was found in 2023 through traditional panning — the natural form preserved from the moment of recovery, untreated and unaltered.
Recovered through traditional artisanal gold panning from a stream deposit in northern Tanzania. The natural form was deliberately preserved — no surface treatment applied.
Geological Note
Tanzanian gold deposits occur in ancient Archaean and Proterozoic greenstone belts of the East African Craton. Alluvial nuggets form when primary vein gold is eroded and transported downstream over millennia.
The Landscape
Northern Tanzania is a landscape of ancient geology, acacia savanna and mineral-rich highland terrain — one of Africa's most historically significant gold-producing territories.
Why This Stone Was Selected
Selected for its exceptional size, natural nodular form and provenance from a significant Tanzanian artisanal gold source.
Selected by: Materials curator
Rarity Note
Natural gold nuggets above 20g are rare in artisanal mining contexts. Nuggets with preserved natural form and documented provenance are increasingly valued by collectors.
Ethical Sourcing
Sourced from a small-scale Tanzanian artisanal cooperative under placeholder ethical guidelines. No large-scale industrial process involved in this specific piece.
